Dental Crowns & Dental Bridges in Austin, TX
At Goehring Dental we want you to have the best smile possible. Cracked, damaged, and missing teeth can affect your smile, and your confidence. Crowns and bridges are just two ways your doctor can restore and protect your teeth and your smile. Both crowns and bridges are fixed prosthetic devices which are cemented onto implants or existing teeth. Crowns are used to cover a damaged tooth while bridges are used to cover the space of missing teeth or a missing tooth.
Crowns and bridges help strengthen and improve your tooth’s appearance, improve your bite, and help the alignment of your teeth. If you have gaps from missing teeth, your remaining teeth may shift out of place affecting your bite and appearance. Proper placement of crowns and bridges can help prevent shifting from occurring.
Crowns cap or cover a damaged tooth. A crown can also be used to improve the tooth’s appearance, alignment, or shape. Porcelain and ceramic caps can be matched to your teeth’s natural color for an attractive appearance. However, your doctor may recommend a metal cap for back teeth because of the pressure experienced during chewing. He also may suggest a porcelain cap bonded to metal for a strong natural looking cap. Crowns are generally used on just one tooth at a time.
Bridges are used to replace one or more teeth. If you have missing teeth, your remaining teeth may shift causing bite problems and this may lead to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Bridges span the space left by missing teeth. Your doctor cements them into place using either your natural teeth or implants, these are known as abutments and serve as anchors for your new bridge. The replacement teeth, called pontics, are attached to the crowns that cover the abutments. Your doctor has his choice of materials for bridges and will recommend the correct one depending on the position of the bridge. Porcelain bridges can be made to match the shape and color of your natural teeth and give you a very natural appearance.
Placement of the Crown or Bridge
Before your doctor can place your new crown or bridge the tooth or teeth must be prepared. This is done by removing some of the surface of the teeth so that there will be enough room for the new crown or bridge. An impression of your teeth is taken and sent to the lab where your crown or bridge is made to match the color and shape of your teeth. While your new crown or bridge is being manufactured a temporary one will be placed by the doctor. Once your permanent crown or bridge is ready, the doctor will remove the temporary one and cement in the permanent one. With proper care, your new crown or bridge should last for a lifetime.
