About Periodontal Disease

Do you have red, swollen or sensitive gums?

Do you have constant bad breath? Have you noticed that your gums are slightly moving away from the teeth? Do your gums often bleed when brushing? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, you may have periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease is the most common form of gum disease. It is caused by bacteria that reside in the oral cavity and, because the bacteria reproduce, plaque or tartar begins to form. If tartar is not cleaned regularly by your dentist, you could develop gingivitis and notice that you have swollen gums that bleed when you brush. Soon, this inflammation may extend to the bone under the gums, resulting in periodontal disease. If left untreated, it can cause tooth loss.

Periodontal disease affects more than 75% of the population'. Even more alarming is the fact that the vast majority of people are unaware they are showing the first signs of periodontal disease and visit their dentist only when the disease is already advanced. Periodontal disease is serious because it can be linked to health problems such as: cardiac and respiratory disease, low birth weight in newborn babies, heart attack, stroke, and osteoporosis.

Laser Periodontal Treatment at Goehring Dental

Conventional methods for treating periodontal disease involve cutting with a blade, scaling/root planing, and suturing; all of which may result in longer healing time and pain after the surgery.

When an advanced laser method is chosen, a combination of two effective and innovative laser wavelengths (Nd:YAG and Er:YAG with very specific clinical and therapeutic abilities) is used for a more effective, minimally-invasive treatment. The two wavelengths, along with the refined capabilities of the Fotona Light Walker® laser system, are used in tandem to achieve new levels of success in the battle against periodontal disease.

After the laser procedure, there is a quicker recovery time, no bleeding after the surgery, less post-surgery pain, and a reduced chance of the gum disease returning.

How does the Laser Periodontal Treatment work?

Step One: The pocket depth is measured.

Step Two: The laser precisely targets the disease in the tooth pocket.

Step Three: Laser light selectively removes the diseased tissue and targets the tartar build up on the root surface for easier removal, while leaving the healthy tissue intact.

Step Four: Stubborn plaque and tartar can then be gently and effectively removed with the laser.

Step Five: The laser gently coagulates the tissue, which can enhance and promote the reconnection to the root for healing and tooth stabilization.
