What Is a TMJ Disorder?
While many people refer to jaw popping and pain as simply TMJ, your TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint. Everybody has two TMJs on either side of their head, located near the ears. A temporomandibular disorder, or TMD, is an issue with these joints.
The Causes of TMDs
There is no one cause of a TMD and because the joint is a complex area, there are many factors that can affect your TMJ. Some of the known or theorized causes of a TMD include disk erosion, disk displacement, cartilage damage, arthritis, and damage to the joint.
Symptoms of a TMD
The most common symptoms of a TMD are:
A sore jawbone joint
Inflammation in the jawbone or joint
Neck and shoulder pain
An aching face or jaw
Swollen lymph nodes
Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
Headaches
If you experience these symptoms, contact our Austin Texas dental office to request an appointment.
Treating your TMD as soon as possible is important because the disorder can worsen over time.
Treatment options include strengthening exercises, pain relievers, stress reduction techniques, and possibly a protective mouthguard for nighttime use.
Surgery is usually not necessary to treat TMDs and is only used as a last resort when all other treatment options have been attempted.
